The combination of trauma and unsafe workplaces is a recipe for burnout, mental and physical health issues and more, and I was no exception to this. As a trauma-survivor with Complex PTSD navigating unhealthy workplaces. While I did have my fair share of unkind leaders, I truly believe it is simply a lack of awareness as to what trauma is, who it impacts, and how we can do simple things to start to create psychologically safer and psychosocially more secure workplaces.

While my experience may seem unique, it’s far from rare. Seventy percent of adults have experienced at least one traumatic event, almost 20% report significant adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) that equate to higher risks of mental and physical health issues, and about 7% of us live with PTSD or C-PTSD. These numbers represent a significant portion of our workforce.
And the costs of ignoring our humanity and its trauma are staggering, in fact Gallup estimates disengagement alone costs businesses $8.8 trillion annually. Unsafe, trauma-unaware organizations also see higher turnover and healthcare costs as well as decreased innovation and brand reputation.
AS PART OF THE SAFE & SOUND WORKPLACE ALLIANCE YOU WILL RECEIVE THE BUSINESS CASE FOR SAFE & SOUND WORKPLACES PRESENTATION WHICH INCLUDES ALL OF THE CURRENT STATISTICS ON HOW ORGANIZATIONS ARE IMPACTED AND HOW THINGS IMPROVE WHEN THEY IMPLEMENT THESE PRACTICES
Because those potentials are huge - employees report a 62% reduction in burnout and a 40% reduction in chronic illnesses and organizations experience a 41% boost in profitability…and to me you can’t get more win-win than that.
WIth burnout, turnover, disengagement, chronic health issues and more on the rise, and organizations seeing these declines in profits and productivity, we cannot just hope for change we must do something. This issue becomes even more urgent when we look at the next generation entering the workforce. These individuals grew up with the trauma of a global pandemic, active shooter drills in schools, the negative impacts of social media, and increased food, housing, and social insecurity. Before we even consider home life or individual experiences related to gender, race, and neurodiversity, they already carry significant multiple adverse childhood experience and will need safe workplaces even more.
We hope to bring together leaders, HR professionals, and people managers to learn, grow, develop and collaborate on creating psychologically safe and trauma(human)-informed workplaces, so that we can drive impactful change, inspire organizational growth and benefit employee and employer well-being.
